Virginia electrician schools offer an apprentice program for students looking to become a certified electrician. Taught both in the classroom and on-the-job, the instruction method is very practical and hands-on. Paid apprenticeship positions are offered to students while working and gaining experience in the field. Coursework includes the National Electrical Code (NEC), residential wiring, commercial wiring, blueprint reading, and occupational safety. The training is provided by a licensed electrician who may be experienced working with a trainee. Programs are taught through community colleges or local electrical chapters.

Students can expect significant competition for jobs upon graduation due to popular demand. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, electricians are one of the higher paid trade positions. The median 50% of all electricians earn between $17- $30 per hour. Since licensing is required each state has its own licensing program. In Virginia, the state licensing agency is the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).
