Electrician schools in Tennessee provide training programs through such agenciesas junior colleges, local electrical chapters and licensed contractors. A high school diploma or GED is required to apply to the program. In Tennessee a basic aptitude test must be taken and passed prior to acceptance into the program. Apprenticeships requires 144 hours in the classroom covering course topics such as occupational hazards and safety, blue print reading, commercial and residential wiring, and the National Electrical Code (NEC). An additional 2,000 hours annually is spent working in the field alongside a licensed electrician. The program takes on average between 3-5 years to complete. Students are taught to collaborate with engineers, machinists and a variety of other trades people.
Upon completion of the program, students are required to pass a state licensing exam. The exam is issued through Tennessee’s state agency known as the Department of Commerce and Insurance. Electricians are needed in several industries including residential homes, office buildings, construction, restaurants, factories, and schools. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities remain positive through 2018.
