Electrician schools in Oregon provide apprenticeship programs for students interested in becoming certified electricians. The common length of apprenticeship training is four years of full time study and work. Students spend thousands of hours in the classroom and out in the field learning the trade. Most of their time is spent working with a licensed electrical worker who serves as a mentor. The nature of electrical work requires hands-on learning that is conducted in a safe environment. Students will fast-paced courses that teach such skills and concepts as residential and commercial wiring, system troubleshooting, safety hazards, electrical equipment, transformers, underground power systems, and National Electric Code (NEC) guidelines.
Students must possess at least a high school diploma or GED and score high enough on an aptitude test that assesses math, reading and writing skills. Licensure in Oregon is overseen by the Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB). Upon certification, graduates should be qualified for entry-level careers in a high demand field that’s expected to grow 12% by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
