Electrician schools in Arizona offer training courses to teach students the skills and knowledge to become licensed electricians. Most programs are career-based and focus on teaching the required skills of the job. Degrees offered include two-year associate’s and short term certificates. Electrician schools can be housed within a community college, trade school, or a training center run by a local chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). In any event, the student will need to be accepted into a four-year apprenticeship program. They’ll perform around 150 hours of classroom instruction and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training per year until they’re ready to take the state licensing exam, which is given by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.
Students take courses such as the National Electrical Code (NEC), blueprint reading, occupational hazards and safety, residential and commercial wiring, basic electricity, conduit bending, power distribution and electrical mathematics. The average electrician makes $22.32 an hour according to the United States Department of Labor.
